Unspun Roving

Unspun, hand dyed roving.

Trees, Moss, and Forrest Streams - Left Image

There are three different ropes of this roving, all done in the same dye batch, but with different fibre compositions.

70% Merino/30% Silk (top in first picture) Is super smooth and has sharp punches of bright undyed fibre to offer great contrast and variegation.

100% cream wool (middle in first picture) is a bit more subtle, and you would have the option of soaking the roving beforehand or the yarn after spinning to let the dyed spread a bit more and settle.

100% grey wool (bottom in first picture) is much more muted. the wool base is an undyed medium grey, so all of the overlaying colours are much more subdued.

Pick one, or pick two and blend them together!

I like to give my roving a basic wash after dying, so that I have the option of letting the colours bleed a bit more after spinning to even out the colours and reduce contrast. If you want your yarn to be higher contrast simply soak the roving in some warm soapy water with vinegar to let the unbound dye lift from the fibre. lay flat to dry in the sun and you're good to go!
